The team competes in the annual SPE Drilling Systems and Automation Technical Section Drillbotics competition.
The design phase. Occurs during the fall semester. We brainstorm, design, and build prototypes of the drill rig. Each month, a report to document our progress is sent to the competition head. A full design report is sent at the end of Phase One. Only five universities are chosen to compete in phase two based upon their design reports.
The build phase. Occurs during the spring semester. We build the drill rig outlined in phase one. The judges will travel to each of the five selected universities at the end of Phase Two, bringing with them the unknown rock sample that we will be drilling into. The drill rig will then be given a score based on its build quality, data collected, and the quality of the hole drilled.
